Cupcakes and Jewels

Tuesday, August 31, 2010
As some of you know, my sister Tara runs a cupcake business called Cupcake Me! We decided to collaborate on a sisterly project and were lucky enough to have our tasty designs photographed by Christina Brosnan.

Christina loves photographing lots of things from babies and curvy bumps to weddings and engagements! Her style is so modern and fresh. Thanks Christina - we had so much fun hanging out with you last week :-)

Tara and I came up with themes in the same way we would with real clients. We chose some classic and whimsical inspirations and let our imaginations carry us away. Cupcakes are like miniature pieces of art and Tara makes all of her floral decorations by hand. Yes, each of those flowers and butterflies are lovingly created from sugar paste to suit each design!

I love this Butterfly Garden cupcake with it's miniature flowers and delicate embossed flowers. *Almost* too pretty to eat...

Or how about this Black Flower cupcake with a very decorative wrapping?

For more inspiration visit Tara's website or Facebook page. Make sure to check out Christina's website and blog too.

Lorraine and Conor's Italian wedding

Thursday, August 26, 2010

Lorraine came to me to discuss commissioning a bespoke headpiece for her wedding. She described her own style and her plans for a relaxed wedding celebration in Arezzo, Italy. I love hearing everyone's ideas about venues and personal touches!

Lorraine brought in the picture above of a headpiece that she had seen in a magazine. She loved its shape as well as the fact that it had delicate white feathers in it. This image was the starting point for Lorraine's bespoke Rangoli headpiece. We worked together to come up with a design that she loved. The piece was made from fine silver crochet and incorporated rhinestones and pearls. I then wove fine white feathers into it. I think you'll agree that she looked stunning on her wedding day. Here are a few words from Lorraine -

" Thanks you for the beautiful head-piece you made for me for my wedding on 25 June in Montebenichi, Arezzo, Italy. I just wanted to let you know that on the day it was perfect and everyone loved that I chose not to wear a veil and go with something that was so simple but yet at the same time elegant...it really was perfect in keeping in with the simple aspect of my wedding".
Lorraine and Conor's wedding was photographed by Lelia Scarfiotti and I was not surprised to read that she is a 'Style Me Pretty' Little Black Book supplier. Have a look at her website and if you'd like to see more of Lorraine and Conor's wedding album, visit this link and click 'Gallery' and then 'I do', followed by the heading 'Put a ring on it'.

Thanks Lorraine and Conor - your Italian wedding is spellbinding. I can almost smell the Italian countryside :-)

Lace inspired hairband

Tuesday, August 24, 2010
Lena is getting married in October and has chosen this gorgeous Magnolia dress by Pronovias. She wanted a delicate headpiece that would complement the beautiful lace fabric.

Lena is wearing her hair in a simple elegant up-do and this fine hair band really completes her look. This piece is also available as a circular comb and is inspired by the scalloped edging of lace. She will also be wearing a dainty pair of matching Rangoli pearl and rhinestone earrings.

It's distinctive, dainty and very pretty - perfect for this stylish Rangoli bride :-)

The story of Rangoli

Friday, August 20, 2010
Many years ago, I spent six months travelling in India and Nepal with my now husband Ben. At the time I had qualified from college and was working as a graphic designer and illustrator. I had lots of expectations about what India would be like and had always wanted to go there. But as anyone will tell you - India is something that you have to experience to fully understand. It gets underneath your skin in a good way!

My senses were completely bombarded! My first memories are of the intense heat, pungent smells and crazy soundtrack of parping horns and Hindi music. I was surrounded by vibrant colours and elaborate decoration that seemed to cover every surface.

This is a country steeped in history and ritual is a part of everyday life. One of the rituals that I came to love was the drawing of designs on the doorsteps of houses by the women and girls of the household. These drawings are particularly popular in Southern India and are called Rangoli or Kolam. It was while we were staying in Hampi that I learned how to draw my first Rangoli. You begin by constructing an isometric grid using pinches of salt. Then you join the dots using a mixture of ground rice powder to create your designs. During religious festivals, these drawings are coloured in with brightly coloured powders.

I came across some great pictures on Flickr which were taken by a Belgian lady called Catherine. Below she describes her love of these designs -

My prefered kolams are not the big, elaborate ones, but those ones, drawn sometimes in haste but always with love, by the housewife or one of her daughters *each early morning* after having cleaned and washed the doorsteps - one of the lovely aspects of south Indian culture...
(Quoting some sentences from the Wiki page "Every morning in southern India, millions of women draw kolams on the ground with white rice powder. Through the day, the drawings get walked on, rained out, or blown around in the wind; new ones are made the next day. Every morning before sunrise, the floor is cleaned with water, the universal purifier, and the muddy floor is swept well for an even surface".
On festive occasions, colourful and elaborate "rangolis" are drawn instead of those humble and often simple "kolams", but it's the latter ones that I really prefer.

It was India that inspired a career change for me. On returning to Ireland, I enrolled in college to study jewellery design. When I set up my business in 1998, Rangoli seemed like the perfect name. The rest is my on-going history...

My next post is all about the bling - Bollywood influence, richly elaborate wedding costumes and over the top accessories to die for. Although my Rangoli style is 'Less is more', I still love the opulence and glamour of Indian attire. I think that there is a Bollywood princess inside all of us!

I'd love to hear your feedback so drop me a line!

Rangoli - the meaning and story behind my business.

Wednesday, August 18, 2010
Many of you have asked me the meaning of the name Rangoli so I thought that I would devote a few posts to where it all began - my inspiration, my story, as well as my passion for designing.

This picture above sets the mood - the magic of India with its striking bold colours. I am collecting images and putting together a selection of pictures, some anecdotes and wonderful memories from the last twelve years of business.

Please get in touch if you have any personal stories about Rangoli or Kolam designs!

Pure simplicity

Friday, August 13, 2010

This photo of a wedding menu really grabbed my attention - I just love its simplicity and it speaks volumes about the style of wedding that this couple hosted. When I dine out, I absolutely love reading imaginative descriptions of food - I admit there is a fine line between intriguing your diners and making them feel out of their depth but I often choose food based on how interesting the ingredient combinations sound, the crazier the better sometimes!

But I would love to be a guest at a wedding where I was simply told that I was going to be treated to a family style dinner! This is a Style Me Pretty wedding and you can read more about it here.

The second image is from one of my favourite food blogs - Sunday Suppers. I think this lavender lemonade would make a nice refreshing drink to wash it all down!

Here is the recipe if you have any lavender left in your garden...

Lavender Lemonade
* 2 cups sugar
* 5 sprigs lavender (stems and buds), plus additional for garnish
* 2 cups fresh lemon juice (from about 10 lemons)
* 1/2 cup fresh lime juice (from about 4 limes)
Directions:
In a large saucepan, bring one gallon of water and the sugar to a boil. Remove from heat; add 7 lavender sprigs and lemon and lime juices. Cool to room temperature, strain, and chill. Serve on ice, with additional lavender for garnish.

The Style Me Pretty wedding was photographed by Sarah Yates.

Rangoli in the media!

Tuesday, August 10, 2010
I'm almost ready to launch my gorgeous new website and have been working with Karen, the designer, to create an elegant template to showcase my designs....

The new site will have an area devoted to media and I've had great fun leafing through all my magazine features and picking out my favourites. These two pics are from a Wedding Journal Magazine feature from a few years ago and I love them. The top picture shows a pair of Swarovski crystal drop earrings and the second image, a silver crochet drop pendant with rhinestone centre piece.

Hope you like them too!

Scented Taxis!

Tuesday, August 3, 2010
Have you decided what perfume you'd like to wear for your wedding day? Our sense of smell is strongly linked to our memories. Even though my *usual* favourite perfume is Coco Chanel, I chose Paris by YSL for my wedding and whenever I wear it now, it brings me right back in time !! xox

Penhaligon's is a London perfumers established in 1870. The first perfume was dreamt up by William Penhaligon after inhaling the steam and sulphurous aromas of his neighbouring Turkish baths. Let their descriptive passage carry you off into your imagination...
"Fragrance is liquid emotion. It unlocks memories and opens doors; it can stop us in our tracks, lost somewhere for a moment in time. Recollections triggered by a dusting or iris, a whisper of clove, a burst of juicy nectarine, a trail of smoky incense, a cream lick of vanilla. At Penhaligon's we understand the emotive power of scent".
How about this for a quirky promotion? Look out for a fleet of Penhaligon’s scented taxis which hit the streets of London this week. Each one will smell of a different fragrance inside and the drivers have all been trained to talk about the various products. Sounds magical to me - I hope they're giving away free samples!

Another of my favourites is Tom Ford's Black Orchid - more for evening time than wedding day but I love the bold oriental spiciness -

"...........Fragrance Notes: Bergamot, Citrus, Mandarin, Black Gardenia, Jasmine, Ylang-Ylang, Lotus Wood, Orchid, Spicy Floral Accord, Orchid (Tom Ford Black Accord), Patchouli, Sandalwood, Incense, Vanilla........"
What are your favourite purfumes?!

X-ray blue

I came across these gorgeous x-ray images of flowers by Hugh Turvey on the Telegraph website. I love how these images capture the fluid lines of these flowers. My accessories are very much inspired by flowers and my sketchbooks are filled with line drawings of the delicate patterns and structures that are found in nature.
